Post-Disaster Rural Educational Support Project

By reaching 6 students in 60 village primary schools where education was disrupted after the February 1050 Kahramanmaraş Earthquakes, in order to improve the quality of the education students receive at home and at school and to support them holistically in social and emotional aspects:

  • We aim to ensure that rural school teachers working in villages receive mentoring from our mentor teachers. Rural school teachers are in the first 3 years of their careers whereas their mentor teachers have at least XNUMX years of teaching experience in villages and rural neighborhoods.
  • We aim to increase teachers’ awareness of their students’ social and emotional learning skills, to provide them with best practices.
  • We aim to support the well-being of families living in these rural areas by strengthening their communication and school-family interaction, and their knowledge on child development.
  • We aim to help children develop their social skills and ability to understand and manage their emotions. In this context, teachers who complete theoretical and practical training on social emotional learning will implement a structured training program in their own classrooms to improve their students' social emotional learning skills.

Mentoring Activities

  • Project participant teachers will hold online one-to-one mentoring meetings. Meetings will be held at regular intervals, via online meetings, on the day and time determined by each mentor and mentee. Mentor teachers will be supported by KODA's educators throughout the process by means of online support meetings and supervision.
  • Mentors will visit their mentee teachers in their cities once in a semester. In this way, mentors and mentees will meet face to face as well as online, strengthening their commitment to both the mentoring process and the program.

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) and Establishing Effective School-Family Relationship Trainings for Teachers

  • A 5-day summer camp will be held for mentor teachers, and in this camp, SEL and effective school-family relationship trainings will be given to support coping with the impacts of the post-disaster period.
  • A 6-day summer camp will be held for mentee teachers, and in this camp, SEL and effective school-family relationship trainings will be given along with foundational contents on quality education in earthquake zones and their surroundings.
  • A winter camp will be held for mentors (4 days) and mentees (3 days) including practical training. Teachers will receive both SEL and effective school-family relationship training during the winter camp.
  • Mentor teachers will receive 4 online support trainings on SEL and 4 on effective school-family relations throughout the year.
  • There will be 4 online support meetings for mentee teachers, where their questions will be answered by experts. The topics of these meetings will be determined according to the areas that the mentees need in their professional or personal development.
