67 village teachers working in earthquake-affected regions met in Gaziantep for a Social Emotional Learning Camp.
The Social Emotional Learning Winter Camp, organized by the Village Schools Change Network (KODA) Association as part of its Post-Disaster Rural Education Support Program, was held in Gaziantep between January 17-19. During the camp, 67 mentee teachers, 14 mentor consultants, and 7 trainers working in earthquake-affected regions came together.
Throughout the three-day camp, teachers worked together on how social-emotional learning could be addressed not just as a concept, but as an approach integrated into the daily flow of the classroom. Through workshops, group presentations, assessment circles, and hands-on activities, topics such as self-awareness, self-management, and communication skills were explored in depth.
Teamwork with mentees drew on classroom experiences, while collaborative work practices with mentor advisors, quality children's literature, and guide revision studies were carried out. The work done during the camp was transformed into concrete applications that teachers could implement in their own classrooms.
In an educational program focused on quality children's literature, author Tülin Kozikoğlu shared with participants the importance of selecting and integrating appropriate books for the classroom, as well as interactive reading. Refik Olgun and Barış Tuzlu, Branch Managers from the National Education Academy, also attended the seminar program held as part of the camp.
The mentee teachers participating in the Social Emotional Learning Winter Camp consisted of classroom teachers in their first three years of teaching, who were working in the 12 provinces affected by the February 6th Kahramanmaraş earthquakes.
These efforts, carried out within the scope of the Post-Disaster Rural Education Support Program, aim to strengthen the professional solidarity of teachers, to expand social-emotional learning-based practices in classrooms, and to improve education in a holistic and sustainable manner in villages in the earthquake zone where teachers at the beginning of their careers are working.
